Character: Tsubaki Yayoi
Canon: Blazblue: Central Fiction, Episode 11, Chapter 92 – After willingly staying behind to watch over Jubei and Nu.
Age: 18
Background Information: Tsubaki on the Blazblue WikiPersonality: Tsubaki had been raised to be a loyal soldier, but her experiences were less than stellar in the beginning of her life. She was taught that the Novus Orbis Librarium was absolute in everything, from their laws, all the way down to the culture of the people. She grew in a home with absolute order, and because of this Tsubaki holds order and justice in the highest regard. She has a tendency to judge someone’s crimes based on the black and white views that were given to her since day one, but because of intervention of Hakumen, she started questioning everything she was ever taught about justice.
But just because she believes in absolute justice, she doesn’t know about compassion. For the most part, Tsubaki was kept indoors for most of her life, only leaving the premises of the Yayoi household whenever her father took her to Duodecim meetings with the other families. Despite the lack of full freedom on social relationships, she was able to form a lasting friendship with one of the many Kisaragi children, Jin Kisaragi, who at first was reluctant to become her friend. Even so, she is the only person capable of thawing frozen Jin’s heart throughout life, a testament to Tsubaki’s compassion.
She is especially protective of her friends, willing to fight for them no matter what—but it wasn’t always like that. Through manipulation and the vision loss she was suffering at the hands of her weapon, the Izayoi, Tsubaki fell victim to a spell called the Mind Eater, which essentially robbed her of free will and made her a puppet to the Imperator, the commander of the Novus Orbis Librarium. This was only possible due to the doubts in her heart set in by Hazama and the orders she was given, to assassinate both Noel Vermillion and Jin Kisaragi on charges of treason. It took the shock of hurting her friends under the Mind Eater spell, as well as the possibility of having killed Jin that made her break free of the curse, and despite it all, she was welcomed back with open arms and a crying session fit for teenage girls.
For all her merits, Tsubaki does have her own pitfalls. For the most part, she’s very, very nosy. If she catches wind of an issue, she will try her best to find out everything she can, and then apply herself into the problem in order to solve it. It was that very trait that allowed her to become lifelong friends with Makoto and Noel. She also has a tendency to carry her pain by herself, something Makoto accused her of back when she had been enrolled in the Military Academy, and something she still struggles with throughout the series as her inner turmoil about having to kill Jin and Noel was hidden and tucked away for the sake of fulfilling the mission that was given to her. She still struggles with it, as she is unable to find the words to fight Ragna’s demand of giving up her dream, only able to fight him off until the very end.
Abilities & Inventory: - Ars Magus: Ars Magus is a combination of both science and magic, crafted by humanity during the Dark War, a war that happened 100 years prior to the main series. Tsubaki’s family prides itself in having high Ars Magus aptitude, but because of questionable breeding practices, she is the only child out of many who have not only survived childbirth, but to grow strong and healthy with a high aptitude for the craft. She can use grimoires in order to do what she needs, such as creating a hammerspace, hold things for her, and even use her weapon, the Izayoi.
- Sealed Weapon Izayoi: A set of clothing, a short sword and a small shield, all meant to help the user fight. The short sword can morph into different weapons by using light as its source. It also lets the user deploy a Zanki Barrier, a space meant to stop anyone and anyone from knowing what goes inside its walls, as well as prevent Phenomena Intervention (changes to the sequence of events) from occuring. In order to use the abilities stated above, the Izayoi steals ‘light’ from its immediate surroundings, even from its user. This side effect is so potent that it may blind the user on one hand and outright kill the user on the other. This form is considered the dormant, ‘shield’ version of the Izayoi weapon.
- Zero-Type Izayoi: The awakened, ‘lance’ state of the Izayoi weapon, first accessed through Noel’s ‘observation’ (ab ability that sums up to “If I can perceive it, then it must exist.”). This version of the weapon is capable of using the same abilities as above (save the transforming weapon), and is also given access to the Immortal Breaker ability, which allows Tsubaki to kill any omnipotent being by making them recognize their deaths as an occurring event in the world. The only way to escape this ability is to have your existence be reliant on something that the world cannot live without, such as Jin’s Power of Order.
- This applies to both forms of the Izayoi: The weapon is sentient, to an extent. It is considered the prototype of the Nox Nyctores weapons, which are fully sentient weapons who protect their chosen masters. Izayoi differs from the Nox Nyctores due to only being used within the Yayoi family, as well as demanding so much from their masters in terms of actively using them. The only way to combat the overwhelming side effects is to have a strong will and mind, which Tsubaki herself conquered only within the events of Chronophantasma.
Nerfs: Because Zanki Barriers are meant to prevent others from looking in, it’ll defeat the purpose of letting others into her dreams. In which case, it could be limited to 3 uses per day (per month is also possible). The use of Izayoi’s awakened version can also be nerfed, also to 3 uses per day.
Inventory: her weapon, Izayoi, and a painter's set (oil paints, a canvas, and a brush set).
Suitability & Plans: Tsubaki has had her dream stolen the moment Ragna, Jin, and Trinity run in to save Noel. This lack of a dream opens up new avenues for her, given that her entire character was driven by the dream of helping her childhood friend Jin build a world filled with peace. That’s all she strived for, but when she was dragged in by strife, lies, and manipulation, she found herself questioning what everything in her life meant, and what true justice really was to her, and if she could really help Jin when she couldn’t even help herself. She wants to find those answers, and if she has to do so through dreams, then she will do her best to do so.
In Songerein, her dream is still with her, and yet her grasp on it is weak, almost feather like. Because of this, I want to be able to explore questions such as “can I truly be myself?” and “what does it mean to uphold justice?”, questions that have plagued her very existence ever since being enrolled in the Military Academy. Ideally, in the world of Songerein, I want her to explore herself as a person away from the battlefield, as she was raised to be obedient to the single governing body of her world, the Novus Orbis Librarium, and away from her family’s rules as one of the 12 noble families of the Librarium.
